Non-verbal reasoning: how to spot the rule in seconds

Non-verbal reasoning is the paper parents most often feel they cannot help with — and it is the one where a single habit makes the biggest difference. Children who stare at the whole picture get lost. Children who ask “what changes, and by how much?” usually find the rule in a few seconds.
The two questions: what is changing (shape, shading, position, number), and how much does it change each step? Everything else is detail.
The five question types

Sequences: find the step, then repeat it
Look at the first two shapes and describe the change in one sentence: “it turned 45° clockwise”, or “the shading swaps”, or “it alternates triangle and square”. Then check that sentence against the third shape. If it still fits, apply it once more — that is your answer.
Children who guess usually skip the checking step. The check is what makes it reliable.
Rotation: move one corner at a time
For a 90° clockwise turn, the top of the shape moves to the right-hand side. Take one distinctive feature — the point of a triangle, the head of an arrow — and move only that feature. Then look at where the rest of the shape must have gone.
For 180°, nothing needs mirroring — it is simply upside down. For anticlockwise, the same quarter turn but the other way.
Reflection: a flip, not a turn
This is where most marks are lost. A reflection is a flip:
- In a vertical mirror line, left and right swap; up and down stay the same.
- In a horizontal mirror line, up and down swap; left and right stay the same.
A shape pointing up-right, reflected in a vertical line, points up-left — not down-right (that would be a rotation). If the answer you have chosen could have been reached by turning the shape instead of flipping it, check again.
Odd one out: name the property
Say the shared property out loud before choosing: “these three are all triangles, however they are turned or shaded”. The odd one out questions on this site deliberately include the same shape in different rotations and shadings to make exactly this point — the shape matters, not how it is sitting on the page.
Missing shapes: read both directions
In a grid, the rule may run across the rows, down the columns, or both. Test your rule on every shape you can see. If a rule works for the top row but not the left column, it is either the wrong rule or only half of it — some grids combine two rules (turn 90° and swap the shading).
How much practice is enough
Short and regular beats long and rare. Ten minutes on one type — sequences, say — then move on. Once the types feel familiar, mix them, because recognising which rule applies is the skill the real test measures.
